COLLEGES SUMMER ATTENDANCE Students with fewer than 60 semester hours at the time of their first enrollment in a State University System institution must earn at least 9 semester hours prior to graduation by attend- ing one or more summer sessions at a state uni- versity. Petitions for waivers of this requirement may be submitted for justified health, academic, or financial reasons, but must include documen- tation. DEAN'S HONOR LIST Undergraduate students who demonstrate excellence in their academic work by complet- ing a minimum of 12 hours credit in a term and achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or better will earn a position on the Dean's List. Students earning grades of I*, N*, etc. are not eligible. GRADUATION WITH HONORS, HIGH HONORS, AND HIGHEST HONORS The faculty will consider recommending stu- dents for graduation with honors, high honors or highest honors on the following criteria: (a) grade point average, (b) distribution and quality of subject matter studied, (c) faculty evaluation, and (d) other pertinent qualities. The student will be considered for honors upon earning a minimum 3.4 academic average or for high or highest honors upon earning a 3.75 academic average. The average will be cal- culated on all work attempted while the student is classified 3FA and above. Transfer credits will be excluded from the average. Superior students should consult the academic advisers in their department about requirements for high or highest honors. Students will be considered for high or highest honors upon earning a 3.75 aca- demic average and the completion of either a written thesis or creative project. On the basis of the quality of the additional work (thesis or pro- ject), the department will recommend students for high or highest honors. Art: Art students who are eligible for high or highest honors will be notified in writing by the Art department. High or highest honor candi- dates in Studio, Graphic Design and Art Educa- tion will be required to submit a portfolio of 10-15, 35mm slides representing their work in the major. Art History candidates will be required to submit a research paper prepared under the guidance of the Art History faculty. Candidates for the BA in general art studies will be required to submit a portfolio or paper based upon their area of concentration. See adviser for specific information. Music: To be recommended for high or high- est honors, the student majoring in music per- formance will be required to complete applicable requirements for the Performer's Certificate. The student in music education, music history/literature, theory/composition, church music, curriculum in combination with outside field, or candidate for the BA in music will submit and successfully complete an inde- pendent creative or researchproject under the guidance of faculty in his or her respective area. Based on the quality of performance or project completed, the area faculty may recommend the student to the department faculty for high or highest honors. Theatre: Theatre majors who qualify for high or highest honors will be notified in writing by the undergraduate coordinator. To be eligible to receive high or highest honors, candidates will complete a significant production project as determined by area faculty. Students should consult their adviser for details. Honors, high honors or highest honors may be awarded upon a minimum of 48 semester hour credits taken at the University of Florida. Eligibility for graduation with honors: Stu- dents who became juniors (a classification of "3") in Fall 1991 or later are eligible for the hon- ors designations established in the 1991-92 and following catalogs. Students who achieved junior status prior to Fall 1991 follow the honors designations established in the 1990-91 catalog. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS To be eligible for graduation, the student must earn a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) for all work attempted in the appropriate curriculum while classified in the college (Art History, Art and Music Education, 2.5). Courses taken while enrolled in another college are not used when calculating the average. Specific grade requirements for various curricula may be obtained from the department or dean's office. OPTIONAL MINORS Students enrolled in colleges other than the College of Fine Arts may wish to consider a minor in the College of Fine Arts. The following minors are currently available in this college: Art History, Music with emphasis in Music Per- formance or Music Literature/Theory, Theatre with emphasis in General Theatre, Acting, Dance, or Design/Technical. Students desiring to pursue this option should review the minor program requirements available in 101 Fine Arts Building A (dean's office) and talk with an adviser. MINORS FOR FINE ARTS MAJORS Students with majors in the Fine Arts may pursue a minor in another department or col- lege. The minor program, however, does not reduce the number of hours required for the major. The number of credit hours required for the minor must be taken in addition to the num- ber of credit hours required for a major. Stu- dents interested in an outside minor are encouraged to discuss the requirements, certifi- cation procedures, and seek approval to enroll with a representative or adviser within the col- lege where the minor program is located. STUDENT WORK The college reserves the right to retain stu- dent work for the purpose of record, exhibition, or instruction. Art Curricula The Department of Art offers undergraduate majors in the College of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in graphic design, in cre- ative photography and in the visual arts with concentrations in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking and Electronic Media. In addition, the department offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art History and in General Visual Arts Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art Edu- cation (B.A.A.E.). The curricula in the College of Fine Arts are intended for students who plan to enter profes- sional careers in fine arts or design, to teach art in public schools or in universities and colleges, or to enter graduate study. The Bachelor of Arts curriculum should be chosen by those students who seek a liberal arts education with emphasis upon the visual arts. The Department of Art is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). SATISFACTORY PROGRESS Students must receive a grade of C or better in all classes in their area of specialization. LOWER DIVISION PREPARATION FOR DEGREES IN ART (GRAPHIC DESIGN, ART EDUCATION, STUDIO AREAS, HISTORY OF ART) Students planning to enter the Department of Art should take the program listed below.
