The Special Education program is a six- semester course of study preparing upper level students which may lead to a master's degree and recommendation for initial teacher certifica- tion in two of the following four areas: (1) Men- tally Handicapped, (2) Specific Learning Disabil- ities, (3) Emotionally Handicapped, and (4) Physically Impaired. The program is divided into two tracks. The first emphasizes severely handicapping conditions and second, mildly handicapping conditions. At the end of the first semester of study in the Department of Special Education, each student must select either Track I or Track 2. Within the Special Education program, or prior to admission, students will complete at least 18 semester hours either in one or more of the following: Health Related Services, Fine Arts, Adaptive Physical Education, Sociology, Psychology, Computer Science, Foreign Lan- guage, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, English, Speech and Language, Geography, Agriculture, Recreation, Health Science Educa- tion. Students are required to submit First Aid and CPR certification before or after admission to the program. Students may take as many as 9 of these 18 semester hours during their first two years of college and are encouraged to do so. Counseling is available in G 315 Norman Hall to assist students in their selections. Students who have successfully fulfilled the requirements for a bachelor's degree at the end of their fourth semester of studies will receive the bachelor's degree without teacher certifica- tion. At the completion of the fifth year of stud- ies, students will receive recommendation for initial certification in the areas of exceptionali- ties completed. Students who have met the admission requirements for the master's pro- gram and who have successfully completed the fifth year of studies will receive a master's degree and recommendation for initial teacher certification in two of the four areas listed above. This also applies to students who com- plete a post-baccalaureate program instead of an M.Ed. program. Initial certification will not be recommended until a student has completed a fifth year. Students who wish to complete a master's degree and who meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School may fol- low that plan. Others may decide to follow the non-degree route.
