The Department of English offers the Master of Arts degree with specialization in literature, creative writ- ing, and linguistics and the Doctor of Philosophy de- gree with specialization in literature and linguistics. The Department also offers a nonthesis option for the Master of Arts degree and the Master of Arts in Teach- ing degree with a major in English. Specific areas of specialization for the Doctor of Philosophy include linguistics, Medieval, Renais- sance, Restoration and 18th-century, and 19th-cen- tury British literature, American literature to 1900, and contemporary British and American literature. Spe- cialization in the literary study of film, rhetoric, or folklore is also possible. After the first year of doctoral work all students must undergo a screening process for actual admis- sion into the doctoral program; prior to this time, all admissions to the doctoral program are conditional. New graduate students should have completed an undergraduate English major of at least 24 semester hours, and doctoral students should have a Master of Arts degree in English. All doctoral students must take a course in bibliography and methods of research and complete an internship in college teaching.
