Purpose of the project is the "rehabilitation, further development, and expansion of The Gambia's applied agricultural research system so that it systematically tests a range of promising improved cultivation packages for traditional and new crops and products under Gambian conditions and, following extensive on-farm trials, promotes their extension to the rural population at large." The PID calls for a design team of four-an agronomic researcher with extension experience, an agricultural economist, and a livestock specialist, in addition to Osborne. The project will build on three current projects, which apparently are terminating: Forestry, Mixed Farming, and Soil and Water Management. The PID mentions a seven to 10 year project. It will work in both crops and livestock and both research and extension. It will be concerned with domestic food production and with export production. Peanuts are The Gambia's largest export earner. The project is also concerned with institution building. We have indicated that FSSP can fit in a variety of ways. It can organize and manage the design team, it can help organize a team if Personal Service Contracts are used, or it can help with team orientation and support urder all alternatives--CAM, IQC, PS E. We have also indicated that FSSP can support the implementation in a variety of ways.
