Approximately two-fifths of the nonwhite individuals earned less than $500 compared with one- fifth of the white individuals (Table 86). Among the higher income classes, approximately 30 percent of the white individuals reported more than $3,000 compared with 3 percent of the nonwhite individuals. Average nonfarm employ- ment incomes for white and nonwhite individuals were $2,237 and $988, respec- tively. Individuals in age classes from 20 to 50 years reported nonfarm work more frequently than other age groups. Approximately 12 percent of the indi- viduals below age 20, 47 percent of the individuals between 20 and 50 years of age, and 20 percent of those persons over 50 years of age reported this income
