This program called for a new international airside ter- minal to be added to an exist- ing landside/airside concept airport. The envelope of the building was dictated by exist- ing runway/taxiway alignment and maximum utilization of the apron in an effort to gain the greatest number of gates. The two-story building is 190,000 square feet. The lower level contains the federal in- spection area for arriving inter- national passengers and the operations area for support of the airlines. The upper level comprises general use seating areas, concessions, lounges, office areas and shuttle car lobby. To provide an atmosphere conducive to movement by large numbers of people, a large volume was provided. The upper level spaces are column- free with arched triangular exposed trusses providing clear span support of roofing. Areas of passenger movement throughout the building are oversized to create a sense of easy movement. The overall goal was to create a sense of space reminiscent of the early train terminals.
