These are general differences. Many newer farm units were established on the basis of one major enterprise, such as grain, hogs, or cattle, requiring heavy initial investments. Their members tend to be better educated than old-line farm household members, and to have spent more time in urban places and positions. However, many children in old-line households are leaving the farm to obtain an education and employment until they can come back to the farm and either take over its management or purchase land for themselves.
