APPENDIX II REFERENCES CONCERNING THE VOLUMINOUS MATUIAL bearing on the Adams- Onis Treaty the salient facts are that there is a surprising amount of source material which has either been insufficiently studied or not exploited at all, that there has been no satisfactory compre- hensive monograph with the treaty as its central theme, and that the innumerable writings incidentally touching on it have been liable to gross misstatements on account of the lack of such a monograph. The very extent of the material has no doubt been one factor prohibiting an adequate investigation of the subject. Most of the records used herein have been known or presumed to exist. Many have been used for other purposes, particularly the manuscripts from the United States Department of State, the British Public Record Office, and the French Foreign Office. The material used, and some additional records listed here, have been selected as either contributing directly to an understanding of the negotiation of the treaty or explaining how conditions of frontier settlement guided the diplomacy. This has meant the elimination of those records dealing with minor related topics, and a great many con- cerned with routine administrative, diplomatic, and military details. Although monographs, articles, and general histories have been studied and are listed, particularly for the previous views and interpretations of the subject, the greater part of this work has been based upon manuscripts and printed documents represent- ing the Actual instruments of the negotiation. The following list of references does not purport to be a com- plete list of all materials relating to the subject It is rather an indication of those I have used, those significant in the historiog- raphy of the treaty, and some others which are suggested for read- ers wishing to pursue the matter farther. Special mention should be made of Samuel Flagg Bemis and Grace Gardner Griffin's Guide to the Diplomatic History of the United States, 1775-1921 (Washington, 1985), which contains notes on all kinds of material.
