instead of its true position of 39 20'. The Forty-second Parallel,
along which it was agreed the limit should run after leaving the
head of the Arkansas, is somA183 miles north of that point.- Later
editions of the map incorporated the results of both the Convention
of October 20, 1818, between the United States and Great Britain,
and the Adams-Onis Treaty of February 22, 1819.
 On the frst of the 1816 editions of the map the headwaters of the Arkanss
wes placed in approximately 42*, and it s eoneeivable that the ultimate
treaty delineation derived from that faet. Sice Adams' Snt proposal was for
the Forty-first Parallel and was made after several later editions were pub-
lished, however, it eems more probable that bargaining between the extreme
demands of the negotiators brought the final result.
