He had been secretary of the legation in the United States from 1801 to 1808, and his younger brother, Jos6, held the same position under Onis (besides being the latter's son-in-law). Heredia was forty-two years of age in 1817. He was the aeeepted authority on affairs with the United States until the autumn of 1818, and again in 1820.
