172 LIFE AND WORK OF DR. A. A. MURPHREE exerted a greater influence for good than did this useful and out. standing man. But it is in individual kindliness that Dr. Murphree excelled. The lovable nature of the man was evidenced countless times in deeds of personal sympathy and help to others in times of trouble. The full list of these kindly acts will never be known. Not only the nature of the actions themselves, but the character of the man who gave, barred them from public knowledge. Florida has lost a shining jewel in her collection of educational, religious and civic leaders. But, more than this, unknown numbers of young men have lost a friend who acted and lived a practical friendship, and who extended the right hand of fellowship in a manner approaching closely the per- fection of Christian idealism. -mAm NEWs. DR. MURPHREE'S GOING p HEaE will be not one student of the University of Florida whom S vacation will not be saddened by the knowledge that when he returns to the college after the Christmas period, Dr. A. A. Murphree will no longer cover that institution with his wonderful personality. Passing away peacefully while he slept, this educator took with him a light that will be difficult to rekindle. It was well that Death came for him at that time because in his waking hours Dr. Murphree would have had no time to give him. He was always busy. Here was a man who had a personality like radium. Its broad expanse of influence was verile to the uttermost circle of the outer boundary. It was this personality which caused the late William Jennings Bryan to mention Dr. Murphree as a possible standard bearer for the democrats four years ago. Many Lake county people knew this great man well. On the morning of his death G. G. Ware, president of the First National Bank here in Leesburg, received from him the usual Christmas card with which his closer friends were remembered.. These friends and the students will miss him first; then every citizen of Florida will miss that great personality which we hoped would help reshape the educational system of Florida within the next few years. But he did a man's work in the world and it is no fault of his that he will not be able to take the leading part in this work of reconstruction that is before the educators of the state. -LEESBURG COMMERCIAL.
