LIFE AND WORK OF DR. A. A. MIURPHREE In his nearly score of years at the University of Florida he saw that institution grow from a small college with not more than 250 young men enrolled to an institution of gigantic sim with an enroll- ment of nearly 2,000, and one of the greatest state universities in the union. Dr. Murphree was well known in DeLand. He paid many visits to this city and appeared on the platform in religious and inspira- tional addresses that have had an uplifting effect upon the lives of thousands of residents of DeLand. Probably one of the greatest virtues of Dr. Murphree and one which endeared him to thousands was his apparent irresistible per- sonality, his faculty for placing himself close to the hearts of the student body. It is said that Dr. Murphree knew and called every student at the University of Florida by his first name, and that long after graduates of the University went out into the world, many of them to fame and fortune, he retained that intimate interest in their welfare and retained their close friendship. The state of Florida will miss Dr. Murphree as one of its greatest citizens, and his demise will be mourned by thousands of alumni throughout the land. -DELAND NEWS.
