LIFE AND WORK OF DR. A. A. MURPHREE service, is the greatest loss our state has yet sustained. other man who has contributed as much as and happiness of the people of Florida; no and character have been impressed upon the and future builders of Florida. Among the have served our state, there are others who some with as keen an insight into human patience and as loyal devotion, some with and statesmanship comparable to his, but in There is no he to the culture, welfare other man whose wisdom lives of as many present i many splendid men who were as scholarly as he, nature, a few with equal marked executive ability no man of Florida, other than Dr. Murphree, was there so extensive and effective combination of the qualities of a great leader. He was spared to our University less than twenty years, yet in that brief period leaders have been developed in every phase of worthy activity in Florida who owe to his precepts and example much of the inspiration and sustaining character which have enabled them to so quickly attain and so worthily retain their high places. With such patience, ability and effect did he build in the youth of this state intellect, character and ambition, that the impress of his devoted work, given at such great personal sacrifice, will be manifested in the noble lives of citizens of Florida after the pages upon which these words are written have dissolved into dust. And so this Executive Council, for the Alumni Association of the University of Florida, inscribes these feeble words upon the pages of its records in an effort to give expression to our love and esteem for Dr. Murphree and appreciation of his loyal service and great achieve- ments, the accomplishment of which hastened his untimely end. Greater even than the poignant sorrow and sense of loss which we now feel is our gratitude to God that such a man lived and worked and died for Florida. May the spirit of Dr. Murphree ever hover over the University of Florida and inspire his successors in office to give effect to those principles and policies of his which have built for us this great and good University.
