TRIBUTES FROM ASSOCIATES AND FRIENDS A FRIEND IS GONE. N THE death of Dr. Murphree we feel a keen sense of loss. Above S all, we feel the loss of a friend, since it is in this aspect that we always think of Dr. Murphree. We entertained a sincere affection for him and he led us to believe that he had a similar feeling toward us. We also feel that our community and our state have lost a great leader in all that has stood for constructive uplift and progress. We believe that his good influence will remain with us long after his death, and we think that the best way in which we can revere his memory is to stand for the same things that he stood for, and to strive for the further upbuilding of the institution to which he devoted his life and of the state to which he contributed so much. -JOHN R. With us it is different He has been taken from us and no man can replace him. To be sure, the home will miss him; the loss there cannot be estimated. As an outstanding character in the church, not only of Gainesville but of the state and even of the nation, his influence can not be meas- ured. Surely here his place will be hard to fill. But it is on us, the student body of the University of Florida, that the blow falls heaviest. Ours is the greatest loss. We knew him. Those words mean much. Few student bodies know their presidents as we knew him. His understanding of the boys and the broad sympathy that he had for them explain the demo- cratic spirit that pervades our campus today. It has been said that in no other university in our nation do the students have access to the office of the president. To him the boys
