118 LIFE AND WORn OF DR. A. A. MURPHREE Many an associate of Dr. Murphree on the University faculty and many a Gainesville business man will cherish the memory of those days on the golf links with a man who could play as he worked-a true sportsman and a splendid com- panion. One such companion was Mr. E. G. Baxter of Gainesville, with whom Dr. 'Murphree frequently made the rounds on the links. With Mr. Baxter the University president has on sev- eral occasions gone on a "golfing excursion" to Atlanta or some other city not too distant, where care could be left be- hind for a day or so while body and mind recuperated and became refreshed for duty. On the golf links of the Gainesville Golf and Country Club, visible from the highway that skirts its pleasant environs, there has been erected a monument to the memory of recently de- parted members of the Club, and the chief place of honor among them is held by Dr. Murphree.
