CHAPTER FOURTEEN CIVIC LIFE AND FRATERNAL INTERESTS As a Member of the Masonic Order Whatever strengthens and purifies the affections, enlarges the imagination, and adds spirit to sense, is useful. -SHELLEY. RESIDENT Murphree was an active and prominent member of the Masonic Order. He held, at one time or another, every office in Jackson Lodge No. 1 at Tallahassee, including the ranking office of Worshipful Master. Dr. Murphree was transferred from Jackson Lodge No. 1 to Gainesville Lodge No. 41 on March 25, 1924. Because of the great responsibilities and duties he was carrying as head of the University, Dr. Murphree was able to devote but very little time to lodge work in Gainesville, but he was quite regular in his attendance at Blue Lodge meetings, and took a great interest in the Commandery, of which he was also a member. In 1926, Dr. Murphree served as Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge of the state of Florida. Many who came in contact with him in Masonic circles during that year have paid him the tribute that he filled the position splendidly. In his speeches his thoughts were well organized and his delivery forceful. A Member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity Our whole social life is in essence but a long, slow striving for the victory of justice over force. --Joan GALsworraY. Dr. A. A. Murphree was a charter member of Alpha Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha fraternity which was installed at the old West Florida Seminary at Tallahassee on February 11, 1903. This was the first of any of the Greek letter fraternities now in Florida and Dr. Murphree took an active interest in its founding and chartering. 113
