ADJUNCTS OF A GREAT UNIVERSITY 93 which reminded the president of the conversation, and asked for information as to what amount would be needed, with the assurance that he contemplated definitely such a gift. Dr. 'Murphree answered in a letter which expressed keen appreciation of the proposed gift and the generosity that prompted it. The letter in part said: "I am overwhelmed by your generous consideration. We have been hoping and praying that some big-hearted, forward- looking citizen interested in young manhood, would provide for this need of the University. Little did I think of putting a suggestion in your mind when I was pointing out to you the two organ lofts at the right and left of the great stage. It will be here that thousands of students down the coming genera- tions will assemble for spiritual uplift and inspiration. Noth- ing so stirs the soul of man and lifts him heavenward as the music of a great pipe organ, under the skillful manipulation of a master hand. After all, our great task here is not alone the intellectual and the physical development of the young men at the University, but their spiritual development and the cultivation of those higher traits of character, which are in effect spiritual. As I see it, nothing will contribute so much in this direction as soul-stirring music and the cultivation of an appreciation of musical art." Dr. Murphree suggested that he had hoped to secure $50,- 000 for an organ that would be adequate and appropriate to the chapel, and that if Dr. Anderson made such a gift his name be used in connection with the instrument. After a few days deliberation, Dr. Anderson replied that he would donate the $50,000, with the remark that he found a great deal of satisfaction in contemplating such a gift, "as I am sure that such an instrument as you will select will dig- nify the chapel as nothing else, and as you say, the spiritual inspiration of a great organ will prove helpful to the many generations of the youth of our state. Permit me to say that there is an added sense of gratification in making this gift to an institution whose affairs are so ably directed and whose chief executive has by his admirable qualities of mind and heart won for himself so enviable a position in the affections of the alumni and the regard of all citizens."
