Co crMA: Seeing that there seems to exist a general mis- understanding arising from various Interpretations placed upon the informa- tion intended to be conveyed in my letter of June 15 to you, I am therefore taking this occasion to clarify that letter and any erroneous Impression as to my meaning which may have been Imparted. A copy of this communication is being released to the Florida Associated Press, and without doubt the press of the State will give it the same full publicity which it accorded my letter of June 15. It was the purpose of this June 15 letter: First, to give you a brief descrip- tive picture of the geology of peninsular Florida. Second, to set forth my views as to the necessity of maintaining the underground water level of the area adjacent to the route to be traversed by the proposed Florida sip canal at approximately the 40doot level above sea as it exists today, in order that there will be no serious disturbance to or Interference with the ground-water level. Third, it was my Intention to express that a lock-type canal as approved by the United States Army engineers would offer little, if any, disturbance to the natural ground-water head or level and would therefore result in little, if any, actual disturbance to the ground water. Under this plan the water level between locks would be maintained at about the present ground-water level
