Of the Pioneers of Tampa TmB CU ATH 7TAILY THIS family is of that strain that has given so many of our sturdy and sterling citizens to the cannonwealth, the Soot- tish. The grandfather, on the father's side, of the present generation, was born in 7digfield district, as it was then called, now county, South Carolina, Novon:er 28, 1785, and died in the same county June 26, 1857. His nam was Wil- liam Culbreath. His wife, Bathsheba, was born also in Edge- field district, January 6, 1789, and died March 22, 1849, in the same district in which both she and her husband had been born, and where they had spent their long lives together, Harry U. Culbreath, the son of this couple was also born in the district where his parents had been born, and where they had always made their home, the date of his birth being October 12, 1814. He was married to Matilda Maynard, December 26, 1841. She was also a native of the ame dis- trict, the date of her birth being Janu-ry 16, 1820. Mrs. Culbreath died in Tampa November 18, 1895. The cUildren of Harry C. and Matilda (Maynard) Cul- breath were as named below: (1) Josephine, born February 18, 1843, in idgefield district, South Carolina. She married John Strother on the 26th day of December, 1861, in the district above named. They had seven children, whose names were as follows: Popie,, ll7ulia, Jula, Id, Pearl, Fannie and Henry C. (2) Ira P., the first son, was born in the old home district, february 27, 1846. He married Julia Long June 27, 1866. They had but one child, a son, named Joseph H, who is now a citizen of Tampa. Mrs. Julia Culbreath died in what is now Pinellas Comty, Florida, then a part of Hills- borough Comuty, August 21, 1867, after the family had moved to Florida, which was in Deceiber, 1866. After the death of his first wife Ira ?. Culbreath married Ida Clarke, of Rdefield district, South Carolina. Ho died in the same district February 9, 1894. As the fruit of this marriage there were born six children; namely, So- phronia, Juanita, WilliB, Matilda, Popie and .lenry Watter- son. (3) H. Pope Culbreath, the second son and third child, of Harry C. and Matilda (Maynard) Culbreath, was boar in Edgfield district, South Carolina, June 28, 1847. He r- ried Henrietta Hackney near Bayriew, Florida, aaroh 2, 186. They had one child that died within a few months after its birth and before it had received a nae. Pope Culbreath died at 'rystal hiver, now in Citrus Coamty, Florida, ebru- ary 3', 1887.- His wife had -died seventeen years before,
