SOf the Pioneers. of a p STHE McCABTY FAMILY STHB first of this family t6 came to Florida and to Tampa was Mitchell McCarty, who was born in Rochester, New York, Sin September, 1818. In consequence of a disagreement with Shis father inrelation to the distribution of property he Left home when quite young and came! south, settling at Mo- Sbile, Alabama. There he became acquainted with Sliaabeth Simmons, whom he married April 21, 1844. Mrs. McCarty was born in Savannah, Georgia, and spent some years of her girlhood in this section of Florida, her father, Rev. Daniel Simmons, a Baptist preacher, having at one time purchased a section of land from the United States government lying between where the towns of Seffner and Th- notosassa now stand and covering what was afterwards called "Simmons Hammock," On account of Indian depredations, Mr. Simmons, who was a man of considerable wealth, and had made his property; valuable by the improvements that he had placed upon it, abandoned it and, with his family, fled to Mobile, Alabama. Here they became acquainted with Mitchell McCarty, then liva ing there, and at the time stated above, his daughter, EliZ-. abeth Ayliffe, was married to Mitchell McCarty. The McKay family was also at the same time living in Mobile, and in 1846 the three families of Simmons, McCarty and McKay took passage in the same steamer for Chassewiska, Florida. Only a few months after this the McKays left for Tampa, but the Simmonses and MeCartys remained in Hernando County till 1849, when the M'cCartys also removed to Tampa. Soon after reaching Tampa Mr. McCarty bought from Captain Leroy G. Lesley property situated on Washington street be- Stween Morgan and Marion. Here Mr. McCarty made his home and also erected a store building, where he engaged in the general merchandise business. He was a charter member of the first lodge of Odd Fe- lows organized in Tampa. Mr. MoCarty died at the canparative- ly early age of forty years, passing away in November, 1858 leaving behind him his widow and three dAughters-Mary Jane SMargaret and Ada. Mrsq McCarty was an active and influential member of the First Baptist Church, and during her lifetime did mieh towards its support. She died February 21, 1869. Of the daughters of Mitchell and !lizabeth Ayliffe (Simmons) MoCarty, the eldest) Mary Jane, married John Angsp McKay, a san of James and Matilda (Cail) McKay, with whom they had come from Mobile to Florida.
