SAUL ON THE WAY TO DA- MASCUS. VHEN Stephen was stoned, there was a young man named Saul who held the clothes of the murderers and looked on. He hated the Christians so much that he went into every house, and wherever he found Christian men or women, he took them to prison. There was so much cruelty against the Christians, that after Stephen's death many went away and lived in other lands. Saul hated them so, that like a wild beast with hun- gry, hot breath panting for prey, he hunted for Christians to destroy them. He went to the high priest and asked for letters to the elders in other cities, giving him permis- sion to bind and put in prison all he could find. He got the letters, and a company of soldiers to help bind and bring the prisoners. The company travelled until they were within sight of the beautiful city of Damascus. They were on a broad open road, where they could see the palm-trees in the distance, and the tops of buildings in the midst of gardens of fruit-trees and olives around the city, and on one side far off, high mountains. 21
