PETER. WHFN Jesus was bound and led away from the gar- den, they brought him to the house of the high priest; and though it was late in the night, they called together the chief priests and elders to hold their court and try him. Peter followed afar off. John knew the high priest, and went into the palace as they took Jesus into the court-room. Peter stopped at the door, but John spoke to the servant-maid who kept the door and then brought Peter in. The servants and officers stood there and gathered around a fire of coals they had made, for the night was chilly. Peter stayed with them near the fire and warmed himself. The same servant who kept the door, when she saw Peter looked closely at him and said, Art thou also one of this man's disciples ?" Peter answered, I know him not." He denied his Master in the hearing of them all, and even said, I know not what you say !" Peter went out into the porch, away from the eyes that looked so sharply at him, and in the still night he heard
