146 ONE OF YOU SHALL BETRAY ME." Three times he came to the three friends who loved him best, and they were asleep! He asked Peter once, "Could ye not watch with me one hour?" The third time, he told them to sleep on and take their rest, for he said, He that betrayeth me is at hand." Lights began to glimmer through the darkness, the heavy tramping of footsteps came nearer, there were torches held high over the heads of strong soldiers whose lances glittered in the light of the lanterns. They came nearer and closer, men with swords and staves; and one, the leader of the band, came to Jesus and kissed him. What a kiss that was! not of love, but a cunning plan to show the men which one to take; they wanted to get Jesus, to kill him, and it was Judas, one of the twelve dis- ciples, who had made a bargain with his enemies that for thirty pieces of silver he would give Him into their cruel hands. He could find Him, for he had been with Him in the upper room that evening, and knew that He had gone out to pray before the last bitter hour came. He knew theL place, every step of the path to the garden, every spot under the great trees, for Jesus had often gone there with his disciples, and Judas with the rest. How dared he to touch that pure, holy face with his wicked lips? How could his traitor eyes look into the eyes that he knew could read his soul? How could he touch Him with hands stained with the price of selling the life of the Saviour of the world?
