112 THE ANGEL OF THE LORD DELIVERETH. Daniel was sent for; he read the words, and gave their meaning; and the king put on him a robe of scarlet and a gold chain, and made him one of the chief rulers. That very night another king conquered the hosts of soldiers drunken and feasting, and the king was killed. The new king, Darius, made Daniel one of the pres- idents, to rule over the princes; and because he was faithful, the king liked him better than any of them. They envied and hated him, and made this plan against him: they persuaded the king to make a law that if any one should ask anything of any God or man, save of him, they should be cast into the den of lions. Would Daniel stop praying to God in heaven ? Just as he always did, three times every day he knelt and prayed, with his windows open towards Jerusalem and the temple. The princes watched him, they told the king; he could not take back his law which he had made. Daniel was thrown to the lions, but you know how he was saved, because he had done no wrong, but was faith- ful to his king and to God.
