The following two officers of the FLORIDA STATE GUARD, (FLORIDA DEFENSE FORCE)) are known to have died or been killed while in Florida state service during World War II. BREEDEN, Thomas Verne COMPANY A, 3RD BATTALION, FLORIDA DEFENSE FORCE (STATE GUARD) STATE OF FLORIDA MILITARY DEPARTMENT OFFICE OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL STATE ARSENAL, ST. AUGUSTINE August 31, 1942. GENERAL ORDERS, No. 12 1. Announcement is made with profound regret of the death of Captain Thomas Verne Breeden, Florida Defense Force, which occurred on August 30, 1942, at Lake Harris, Florida. Captain Breeden was born at Bennettsville, South Carolina, on March 27, 1897. He entered the military service of the United States on August 28, 1918, and was discharged on September 4, 1919, in grade of Sergeant of Infantry. He served Overseas during World War No. I. He was commissioned Captain, Florida Defense Force, on May 6, 1941, organized and commanded the Third Company, later Company "A", 5th Battalion. Funeral services will be held at Plant City, Florida, at 4:00 p. m., on September 1, 1942. As a mark of respect the flag at the State Arsenal arid all armories throughout the State will be displayed at half staff on day of funeral.
