(The 850th operated B-17 heavy bombers out of bases in England as
part of the 8th Air Force. They attacked strategic targets in
Germany and those parts of northern Europe occupied by the Nazis.
During July of 1944, the group was also employed against tactical
targets in support of Allied ground forces in Normandy. on the
18th of July, the 801st, with others, was sent against strategic
targets in northern Germany including the port of Kiel and
Cuxhaven and the Hemmingstedt oil refineries. Three B-17's,
including Michekson's, were lost to enemy action).





MILTON, Johnnie James


COMPANY H, 124TH INFANTRY
(Columbia County)

Born: 8 April 1920 Baker County, Florida.

Milton had completed one year of high school and lived in Lake
City when he first enlisted in Company H, 124th Infantry Regiment
13 September 1936. He was inducted into federal service as a
Private 25 November 1940. Later he was assigned to the 117TH
INFANTRY REGIMENT, 30TH INFANTRY DIVISION. He was a Sergeant at
the time of his death.

His next of kin included R.M. Milton, father, Lake City, Florida.

KILLED IN ACTION; 13 July 1944, St. Lo, Normandy, France.

117th Infantry Regiment 30th Infantry Division


(The division had been engaged in the heavy fighting in the
Normandy hedgerow country in and near the important road Junction
of St. Lo. Regiments of the division fought a slow and costly
battle for the country north and west of this important city and
the 13th was one of many days noted as one of small gains at
heavy cost against a well-entrenched and tenacious enemy).
