MARTIN, Clifford Eunice COMPANY B, 124TH INFANTRY (Dade County) Born: 21 July 1916 Whigham, Georgia. Martin lived in Miami, had finished grammar school and worked as a mechanic earning $21 per week when he enlisted in Company B, 124th Infnatry Regiment 11 July 1940. He was inducted into federal service as a Private 25 November 1940. Later he was assigned to the 503RD PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT, 11TH AIRBORNE DIVISION. His next of kin included Lottie Martin, mother, Miami, Florida. (He was married but separated at the time of death). KILLED IN ACTION, 17 September 1943, Southwest Pacific. 503rd Parachute Infantry 11th Airborne Division (Although listed as part of the 11th Airborne Division, the 503rd operated separately and arrived in the Pacific nearly a year before the division arrived. The 503rd was used extensively during the campaign in New Guinea. During September 1943, the regiment was employed at Nazdab to secure a forward base for American and Australian forces under General Douglas MacArthur. MArtin was killed the last day of deployment and action in the Nazdab area). MATHEWS, Arthur Franklin m-- - - - HEADQUARTERS BATTERY, 2ND BATTALION, 116TH FIELD ARTILLERY (Polk County) Born: 4 December 1920 Bartow, Florida. Mathews had completed one year of high school, lived in Bartow and worked as a student and clerk when he enlisted in Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 116th Field Artillery 24 January 1939. He was inducted into federal service as a Private 25 November 1940. Later he was assigned to the 508TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM, attached to the 82ND AIRBORNE DIVISION. He was a Corporal at the time of his death. KILLED IN ACTION; 12 June 1944, Normandy, France.
