(The 63rd operated B-24 heavy bombers against Japanese targets in
the Southwest Pacific. At the time of Chesser's death, the
squadron was operating from air fields in Leyte, Philipine
Islands).





CHILDRESS, Robert L.


HEADQUARTERS BATTERY, 2ND BATTALION,
116TH FIELD ARTILLERY

Born: 31 October 1920, Fort Meade, Florida.

Childress had completed one year of high school, lived in Bartow
and listed student as his occupation when he enlisted in
Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 116th Field Artillery 3
October 1939. He was inducted into federal service 25 November
1940. Later he was assigned to the 603RD TANK DESTROYER
BATTALION, 6TH ARMORED DIVISION. He was a Techanician 5th Class
at the time of his death.

His next of kin included Mrs. F.C. Pellem, mother, Bartow,
Florida.

DIED OF WOUNDS; 17 April 1945, Germany.

6th Armored Division


(The division was part of the U.S. Third Army which crossed the
Rhine River in south-central Germany during March of 1945 and fought
its way across Germany towards the Elbe River and a meeting with
the Russians. During the week's fighting that took Childress's
life, the Division crossed the Mulde River and captured Rochlitz
and Lunzenau on the Elbe).
