BUTLER, Buford Alexander ------------------------ COMPANY L, 124TH INFANTRY (Manatee County) Born: 16 May 1913 Cadwell, Georgia. Butler had completed grammar school, was a resident of Manatee, had experience as a mattress worker and was employed as a grocery clerk when he first enlisted in Company L, 124th Infantry Regiment 13 April 1938. He was inducted into federal service 25 November 1940 as a Private 1st Class. DIED NON-BATTLE; 28 October 1941. Date, location and unit assignment at time of death are unknown. BUZZETT, Julian Rexall COMPANY E, 106TH ENGINEERS (Franklin County) Born: 25 January 1912 Apalachicola, Florida. Buzzett was a high school graduate and worked as a clerk when he first enlisted in Company E, 106th Engineers 8 January 1931. He served several enlistments and had been awarded the Florida Service Badge (Medal) 22 December 1936. He was inducted Into federal service as a Staff Sergeant 25 November 1940. He later accepted a commission and served with the 49th Engineer Regiment (which was eventually divided into the 49TH and 237TH ENGINEER BATTALIONS). He was a 1st Lieutenant at the time of his death. His next of kin included WIlliam D. Buzzett, father, of Apalachicola, Florida. KILLED IN ACTION; 6 June 1944, Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. 237th Combat Engineer Battalion (The combat engineers were landed ahead of the first assault waves on Omaha Beach with the mission to destroy beach obstacles and underwater anti-landing craft traps. Because of unexpected complications, including undamaged German defenses, the engineers suffered substantial casualties, more than 50% for most companies, including Lieutenant Buzzett).
