GAME OF THE WEEK Miami at Virginia 'Canes eye di following a confidence-building 48-21 victory over visiting Eastern Michigan, Virginia head coach Mike London's rebuilding pr ....'. i ..... 1 - il..ii... hurdle this Saturday when Miami visits Scott Stadium. London, who was a star player at Richmond and a defensive back for the Dallas Cowboys, had two different stints as a Virginia assistant before becoming his alma mater's head coach in January 2008. He parlayed a 2008 FCS national championship at Richmond into a return to Charlottesville last December. While London finds himself tinkering and trying to overcome a period of mediocrity and inconsistency that plagued former head coach Al Groh, the Hurricanes are looking to continue paving the road to what they hope is a run to the program's first ACC Coastal Division title. Records: Miami 5-2 (3-1 ACC Coastal); Virginia 3-4 (0-3 ACC Coastal). Coaches: Miami's Randy Shannon (26-19); Virginia's Mike London (27-9). Series: Miami leads 5-2. Kickoff: Noon ET Saturday. TV: ESPN or ESPN2. Outlook: Miami displayed a balanced attack against North Carolina last Saturday night as it got 217 yards and three touchdowns from the arm of Jacory Harris and 230 rushing yards from the trio of Damien Berry, Lamar Miller and Mike James. For Virginia to pull an upset, it cannot play into the hands of a defense that ranks first among FBS schools in pass-efficiency defense.... Quar- terback Marc Verica avoided an interception after throw- ing three in a 44-10 loss to North Carolina and finished the win over Eastern Michigan with 203 yards and two scores on 18-of-31 passing. The Virginia faithful had to be a little discouraged that the one-win Eagles collected 290 yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries. THE REST OF THE MATCHUPS Florida State at N.C. State Records: Florida State 6-1 (4-0 ACC Atlantic); N.C. State 5-2 (2-1 ACC Atlantic). Coaches: Florida State's Jimbo Fisher (6-1); N.C. State's Tom O'Brien (96-68). Series: Florida State leads 21-9. Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET'Thursday. TV: ESPN. Outlook: For the Seminoles to extend their current winning streak to six games, they must apply pressure to N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson. That should not be a problem, considering that Florida State ranks first and fifth, respectively, among FBS programs in sacks and tack- les for loss per game and the Wolfpack yields an average of 2.43 sacks per game. However, it's what Wilson does when he's not in the clutches of a defender that will make the difference in this pivotal Atlantic Division showdown. The conferences leader in passing yards and total offense had his fifth-consecutive 300-yard passing game, but he threw three interceptions against one touchdown in a 33-27 over- time loss at East Carolina on Oct. 16. Wilson has thrown eight of his nine interceptions since closing out September with a 45-28 win over Georgia Tech. Clemson at Boston College Records: Clemson 4-3 (2-2 ACC Atlantic); Boston College 2-5 (0-4 ACC Atlantic). Coaches: Clemson's Dabo Swinney (17-11); Boston College's Frank Spaziani (11-10). Series: Clemson leads 9-8-2. Kickoff: Noon ET Saturday. TV: ACC Network: Outlook: The Tigers did a tremendous job by limiting Georgia Tech quarterback Joshua Nesbitt to 2 yards on 15 carries in last Saturday's 27-13 win over the defending con- ference champion Yellow Jackets. While Clemson won't have to worry about a Boston College quarterback beating them, they will have to contain Montel Harris. Harris Illustration 2010 Bruce Plante (planteink.com) vision crown registered his fourth 100-yard game of the season (second straight) by rushing for 116 yards and two scores on 27 carries in last Saturday's 24-21 loss to Maryland. Clemson sophomore Andre Ellington is looking to outplay Harris and follow up his career-best 166-yard outing against Geor- gia Tech with his fifth 100-yard game of the season. Duke at Navy Records: Duke 1-6 (0-4 ACC Coastal); Navy 5-2 (FBS Inde- pendent). Coaches: Duke's David Cutcliffe (54-50); Navy's Ken Niumatalolo (23-12). Series: Navy leads 20-13-5. Kick- off: 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. TV: CBS College Sports. Outlook: LastSaturday's 44-7 loss at Virginia Tech marked the second-straight game that Duke quarterback Sean Renfree failed to throw a touchdown pass. Renfree completed just 12 of his 32 attempts for 116 yards and threw one of his team's two interceptions. Backup quarterback Brandon Connette led the Blue Devils, who had 208 yards of total offense, with 43 yards on eight carries.... With this being their third game against an ACC team this season, the Midshipmen could be considered the conference's unofficial 13th member. Stopping Alexander Teich will be the most daunting task for a Duke defense that was lit up byTyrod Taylor and the Hokies last week. Teich rushed for 210 yards last Saturday as Navy controlled the clock for 35:49 and posted a 35-17 dominating win over Notre Dame. Wake Forest at Maryland Records: Wake Forest 2-5 (1-3 ACC Atlantic); Maryland 5-2 (2-1 ACC Atlantic). Coaches: Wake Forest's Jim Grobe (94-89-1); Maryland's Ralph Friedgen (71-48). Series: Maryland leads 41-16-1. Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. TV: ESPNU. Outlook: The Demon Deacons need a repeat perfor- mance from freshman running back Josh Harris, who ran for a career-high 241 yards on 21 carries in a 52-21 loss at Vir- ginia Tech on Oct 16. Quarterback Tanner Price struggled against the Hokies after setting aWake Forest freshman record with 326 yards in a one-point loss to Navy, buthe and Chris Givens did hook up for a 78-yard gain.... One drawback for the Terrapins from last Saturday's win over Boston College was the measly 43 yards they garnered on 33 carries. Freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien shook off a three-interception performance against Clemson by throwing three touchdowns and no interceptions, while the Terrapins' defense forced three turnovers and held Boston College to 203 yards of total offense. William & Mary at North Carolina Records: William & Mary 6-1 (4-1 FCS Colonial Athletic Association); North Carolina 4-3 (2-2 ACC Coastal). Coaches: William & Mary's Jimmye Laycock (206-142- 2); North Carolina's Butch Davis (75-41). Series: North Carolina leads 12-0-2. Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. TV: ESPN3.com. Outlook: The Tribe's 17-16 win over visiting Delaware in last Saturday's meeting between a pair of top-five FCS teams was their sixth-straight since a 27-23 loss to Mas- sachusetts in the season opener. A bit of a quarterback controversy may have arisen in the win over the Blue Hens as Mike Callahan led William & Mary to a comeback victory after replacing starter Michael Paulus midway through the third quarter.... After a four-game winning streak and an early 10-3 lead at Miami last Saturday, North Carolina finds itself back to the drawing board after surrendering 30 unanswered points to the Hurricanes. Injuries are now starting to take a toll on a Tar Heel squad that has already had to overcome NCAA scrutiny, suspensions and dismissals. m ***UNBELIEVABLE*** HUGE 28x74 4BR/2BA Approx. 1,820 sq. ft. A 3-yard scoring pass from freshman Chase Rettig to classmate Bobby Swigert with 12:09 left in the second quarter of last Saturday's 24-21 loss to visiting Maryland capped a 15-play drive that covered 75 yards and took 8:09 off the clock. It was Boston College's longest drive since a 17-play march in a 16-14 2008 Music City Bowl loss to Vanderbilt. iMHSON The Tigers have not fallen victim to a turnover since committing six in a 30-21 loss to Miami on Oct. 2, and will enter this Saturday's game at Boston College with a streak of 196 consecutive offensive plays without a turnover. This is the first team in school history not to commit a turnover in three consecutive games. pW Sophomore Conner Vernon registered team-highs of six receptions and 44 receiving yards last Saturday in a 44-7 loss at Virginia Tech. The performance gave Vernon 43 receptions on the season, which made him the first player in program history to catch at least 40 passes in his freshman and sophomore seasons. M RIDA ST. With a victory over N.C. State on Thursday night, the Seminoles would become the Atlantic Division's new leader in conference wins since the 2005 expansion. Boston College fell to 26-20 all-time in ACC games with last Saturday's loss to Maryland. With a 4-0 mark in conference play this season, the Seminoles have improved to 26-18 over their last 44 games against ACC foes. T ECH The Yellow Jackets made five trips into Clemson territory over a span of 33:41 between early in the second quarter to early in the fourth quarter and managed only 13 points. "I was frustrated because we'd move the ball, but then we'd kill ourselves," Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson said. iMYL ANHD Senior Antwine Perez was named the ACC's Defensive Back of the Week for his performance against Boston College. The Southern California transfer, who ranks second in the conference with an average 1.3 passes defended per game, intercepted two passes and recovered a Montel Harris fumble within the game's first 29:01. 1MI Senior RB Damien Berry ran for a game-high 109 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in last Saturday's 33-10 win over visiting North Carolina. It was the fourth-consecutive 100-yard rushing performance for Berry, one of only four players in program history to accomplish the feat. NMAROLINA Senior Johnny White collected 76 of his team-best 85 yards on a second-quarter touchdown run against Miami. The run was the program's longest since Willie Parker ripped off a 77-yard scoring run against Maryland nine years ago. i-M TATE The Wolfpack's 31 A touchdowns this season have been scored by 14 different players. The only Football Bowl Subdivision teams to have more players score touchdowns than N.C. State this season are Stanford, Oregon and Utah. The 31 touchdowns are more than 25 previous N.C. State teams have scored in an entire season since the formation of the ACC. iiM INIA Converted linebacker Terence Fells-Danzer was named the ACC Specialist of the Week after scoring on a 53-yard run and a 70-yard kickoff return in last Saturday's 48-21 win over visiting Eastern Michigan. The junior's kickoff return was the second shortest for a touchdown in program history. ilIECH Already the winningest starting quarterback in program history, senior Tyrod Taylor can become the Hokies' all-time leader in total offense when Virginia Tech plays host to Georgia Tech on Nov. 4. Bryan Randall's school-record 8,034 yards of total offense is just 96 yards more than Taylor's current career total. ,.-K FOREST senior Devon Brown enters this Saturday's game at Maryland needing three receptions and 22 receiving yards to become the 19th player in program history with both 100 career receptions and 1,000 career receiving yards.
