O'Brien man cited in crash with school bus

  An O'Brien man was in-
volved in a wreck with a
school bus in Columbia
County that injured a 9-year-
old bystander, according to
the Florida Highway Patrol.
  James Derringer, 44, was
traveling north on SR 247
in a 1999 GMC pickup
around 6:56 a.m. on Oct. 22
when the left side of the
truck struck the rear of a
1997 school bus driven by

57-year-old  Mary   G.
Greene of Lake City. The
bus was reportedly stopped
on SR 247 for the boarding
of students.
  After the collision, the
GMC    rotated  counter
clockwise and  traveled


onto the east unpaved
shoulder of SR 247, ac-
cording to FHP. The GMC
struck 9-year-old Victoria
Powell, Lake City, as she
was waiting to board the
bus. Powell suffered minor
injuries.


  In a press release FHP
indicated there were 12
passengers on the bus. No
one else involved in the
crash received injuries.
  Derringer was charged
with careless driving, said
FHP.
