Regional News Bomb may have been detonated at Gibson Park Target may have been disabled hunters; By Stephenie Livingston stephenie.Iivingston@gaflnews.com JASPER - When a group of dis- abled hunters decided to camp at quiet, sleepy Gibson Park located on the Suwannee River just off CR 751 in Hamilton County, there weren't expecting to be awakened by an ex- plosion. "It was so big it shook my RV," said park hostess Sue Dudley. "I thought a propane tank had explod- On Thursday, Oct. 14 a group of disabled hunters had retired for the night at the local park after a day of hunting at Holton Creek. Around 10:30 p.m. a white Ford four-door truck slowly crept into the park and two men got out, according to Dud- ley. The men lit some sort of explo- sive device and threw it just a few yards from a campers' RV. Dudley said she ran to try and see the truck's license plate, but the men got no injuries reported away before she could see the num- bers. Afterwards, there was red plas- tic everywhere and the area smelled of gun smoke, she said. Dudley readily called both the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and the Agri- cultural Station across from the Park. The officer at the station told Dudley he could hear the explosion from in- side the station. Dudley believes the men who ig- nited what may have been a home- made bomb, were hunters as well. "Their tailgate was down and I could see a ladder, probably used for a tree stand," she said. Both Dudley and the park's direc- tor Chuck Burnett said they believe the incident may have been some form of retaliation. Disabled hunters are allowed to kill does at Holton Creek, unlike other hunters. Dudley said the group is returning soon to hunt again at Holton Creek. "I hope we don't have anything else like this happen," she said. The Sheriff's Office was not imme- diately available for comment.
