You've got to have two feet in, to have a successful program," he said. "The kids have to believe in your philosophy, and so does the administration and the community." Jerry Odom SPORTS COMMENTARY Good stuff Sportabout By Tom Daniels A. Rod doing steroids, Barry Bonds going to court, and Lane Kiffin disrespecting Florida. What to write! We just celebrated Hank Aaron's 75th birthday. It's Black History month and' I'm taking "Hammerin Hank." Aaron is always the first name when you open the baseball encyclopedia. He only stood 6 feet, 180 lbs but quick wrists and a great eye made the difference. He made his debut in 1954 aid was hidden on a team of stars. There were only eight National League teams until 1962. The Milwaukee Braves were a winner, always battling the Dodgers and Giants for the rights to lose to the Yankees in the Fall Classic. Aaron's first team mates included Joe Adcock the player who broke up Harvey Haddix's longest no hitter, Billy Bruton, one of baseball's first black stars, and a stolen base leader, Del Crandall an all- star catcher, Lew Burdette a World Series star, and Gene Conley a two-sport star playing basketball in the off season, and a couple of guys named Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn, who are in the Hall of Fame, were also on the team. Aaron played with both Torre brothers, Frank and author Joe. He even played with his own brother, Tommie. As a matter of fact, he and Tommie hold the record for most homers hit by brothers. Tommie 13 and Hank 755. In 1957 Aaron played in' an all-black outfield that included Bruton and Wes Covington. Aaron led the league in homers and RBIs.
