Local officials seek federal stimulus dollars Continued From Page 1A that two projects on the list for stimulus funding will not be funded because the city had awarded bids for the projects pending funding. He said the city was told the projects needed to be "shovel ready," meaning they needed' to get underway within 120 days of receiving funds. "Now we find out we jumped the gun, that because we bid the projects out and it's waiting for funding we're not entitled to stimulus money," Farley said. "I think that's bogus." "The citizens are going to see a huge increase in cost to dp this work," Farley added. The projects in question are phase two of the city wastewater treatment plant Sand reuse line,' and phase one of the city stormwater project. David Mica,' special assistant to Gov. Charlie Crist, told Farley he would look into the matter and see whether anything could be done to secure the funding. Suwannee County School Board Chairman Jerry Taylor asked the panel to support an amendment that was expected to be introduced yesterday by U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez that would allow stimulus funding for Florida education. The economic stimulus bill passed by the house requires states to spend the same amount on education the current fiscal year as was spent in 2005-06. Taylor said because Florida has faced serious cuts to education over the last couple of years, the state does not meet the criteria for stimulus - funding. "As the legislature stands at this point we are not eligible to receive any stimulus money because of funding levels," Taylor said. "As you all are aware in the state of Florida we are in a crisis as far as funding for education. We're just whistling in a graveyard." Danny Hales, regional director for Suwannee River Regional Library, said a slow economy Springs more people to libraries, and his region is in need of federal and state dollars for the construction for three new libraries waiting to get underway. "We need money to build libraries in the growing state of Florida," Hales said. "We're the last people to get money, I think, maybe than the dog catchers. We need a bone." Donald Robinson, acting county coordinator, asked the panel to support county funds for the Suwannee County Courthouse Annex and a project west of Live Oak at the US 90 and 1-10 interchange designed to attract businesses to area. The county is collaborating with the city and chamber on the project called The Rural Economic Development Catalyst Project. The annex will provide a meeting room for county commissioners and extra storage for public records. The commissioners currently hold board meetings in at Live Oak City Hall. "My board has been homeless, per se, for the last seven years," Robinson said. They've given up their meeting room to add space for county offices."
