PAGE 9B I I Ill.'/-Xl,0 ...I I -IVIS..a--I 1, .VU FIRST-PERSON: Another book for the gullible Continued From Page 8B trouble accepting Mc- Gowan's story "that she descends from a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene." "Yes, I believe her," Todd said. "Her passion and mission are so strong, how can she not be?" Larry Kirshbaum, Mc- Gowan's literary agent, told USA Today, "I believe her absolutely." He added, "She had total credibility with me from the very be- ginning." Kirshbaum, former.CEO of Time Warner Books, re- cently began his own liter- ary agency. One of his first clients was McGowan. Kir- shbaum. described Mc- Gowan by saying, "I feel she is entirely credible. She spent 20 years of her life re- searching this subject." Continuing he said, "You have to give her the benefit of the doubt because she is totally rational." Let me see if I under- stand correctly accord- ing to Todd and Kirsh- baum, you can make an outrageous daim, offer ab- solutely no proof whatso- ever that your assertion is even remotely true, but be- cause you have shown in- 'terest in the subject for an extended period of time, and you seem passionate, you are deemed credible. Credible enough that ac- cording to USA Today, Kirshbaum was able to broker a seven-figure, three-book deal with Si- mon & Schuster. You read right, seven- figures. For the mathemati- cally challenged that is, at the very least, one million dollars. Simon & Schuster be- lieves "The Expected One" will sell. The publishing gi- ant is investing $275,000 to promote McGowan's book and has ordered an initial printing of 250,000 copies, according to USA Today. I do not know if the exec- utives at Simon & Schuster believe McGowan's story. However, I feel confident that they hold the proda-. mations of P.T. Barnum in high esteem. They have to, because only a sucker would be drawn to Mc- Gowan's story and- plunk down $25.95 in order to read it. Although the styles of music and dance vary widely from one culture and generation to the next, we all understand the language of music and can intuitively sense whether the music is happy or sad, or whether it is conveying any of a whole host of possible emotions. In fact sometimes music seems better able than words to convey what we are really feeling. Words are feeble symbols and mere abstractions, whereas music often seems to more directly express our true thoughts and feelings. How fitting that many of the Psalms tells us to praise God with music and dancing: "Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with timbrel and lyre!" pP (Psalm 149:3) There are times - when we just cannot contain ourselves, and the cosmic music that is all around us sings through us. At those times, we almost feel as if we have to sing or dance, and it is right and fitting to do so. Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with flute and harp! Praise him with timbrel and dance praise him with strings and pipe! -R.S.V Psalm 150:3-4 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 311 S.
