The County Record, AUGUST 29, 2007, Page 11 JF UNIVERSITY ofHN CO UF FLORIDA C LH'id9 IUN IFAS Extension Cattle producer meetings set; students enjoy Xtreme Cuisine BY JUDY LUDLOW Extension Director FRESH FROM FLORIDA FARMS, EXTREMELY EDU- CATIONAL Our young chefs were at it again, this time learning to cook through a program called Xtreme Cuisine. Sponsored by the Florida Department of Agriculture and our local Blountstown Farm Bureau office, these kids used Fresh From Florida produce to create blueberry pancakes, whole wheat pizza and more. We also learned amazing facts about Florida's agricul- ture. For example, did you know that all the potatoes produced in Florida during a recent crop year could sink a battleship? Also, during the 18th century, in France, the tomato was commonly called the "love apple!" Thank you to our sponsors for a fun, educational day! THE WEATHER-- FARMER'S FRIEND AND ENEMY Among many factors our farmers keep track of when planting and harvesting crops is the weather. It is not an easy job, and this year's drought has been devastat- ing. The following website from the Southeast Climate Consortium has released the late summer seasonal cli- mate and agricultural weath- er outlook on http://www.agclimate.org. Topics on this site include late summer outlook, crop conditions, and looking for- ward to fall and winter. SMALL BUGS, BIG SOUNDS! Have you ever wondered what kinds of insects make those classic summer evening sounds? The follow- ing website lets us. see and hear 76 species of crickets, katydid, and cicadas that live in the United States. The photos are wonderful and the sounds are fascinating. Visit http: //www . musicof nature.com/songsofnmsects/i frames/OLG_main.html to hear it all. Also visit http://pests.ifas.ufl.edu/bes tbugs/ for more award win- ning buggy sites. His best finish in the seven races was 8th. However, it was enough to impress Jack Roush, and Edwards became a full-time Truck Series competitor in 2003, driving the #99 Ford F-150 sponsored by Superchips. In August of 2004, he made his Nextel Cup Series debut, replacing Jeff Burton, who left the team, in the #99 Ford Taurus for Roush Racing, at the Michigan International Speedway. In 2005, Edwards became a full-time driver in both the Nextel Cup and Busch Series. On March 19, 2005, Edwards won the Aaron's 312 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, recording his first Busch Series win. The next day, he beat Jimmie Johnson by 2-hundredths of a second to win the Golden Corral 500 at the same track for his first Nextel Cup Series win. Last year, Edwards' missed the Chase for the Cup. His best finish was at Michigan Speedway where he finished 2nd. A glitch prevented NASCAR from checking videotape to see ,i. whether Kyle Busch crossed the commitment line when he faked ' going into the pits during last Friday's Busch race. "Our checks " and balances failed," David Hoots, NASCAR's Nextel Cup series , director, said at the Cup drivers' meeting Saturday. A NASCAR official ruled that Busch crossed the line and should have entered the pits instead of returning to the track. The replay showing that the call was wrong became available after NASCAR penalized Busch and put him at the back of the field. NASCAR acknowledged the mistake, but it was too late to change Busch's place in the lineup. After the race Edwards said, "It's such a huge win because it's Bristol. It's a short track. It's really tough. It's 500 laps. It's gruel- ing." With this win, Carl clinched a spot in the Chase. Clint Bowyer finished third and moved closer to his first berth in the Chase. The Chase field will be seeded based on the bonus points earned through "regular season" victories.
