Guilt Feelings Hebrew 10:2 Neal Hightower told this story, "When I was a boy vis- iting my grandfather's farm for the summer, one of the favorite pastimes was telling stories. I recall sitting on the porch after supper one evening and hearing the grown-ups spinning yarns' about snakes swallowing calves. Toward sundown, my grandfather handed me a horse bridle and told me to go catch Jim, the horse, and bring him to the house. Throwing the long, black bri- dle over my shoulder, I went off on the errand, full of the vigor of a nine-year-old, but also with a mind full of the stories I had been hearing. "Striding along and whistling to keep my fears of the approaching darkness at bay, I suddenly- heard a rustling noise behind me. For more information, call Covenant Hospice at 482- 8520. Looking out of the corner of my eye, I noted a 'black thing' following me. With activated imagination, I immediately concluded that a black snake was about to eat me up. Off I ran like a deer. However, it seemed that as I ran faster, the snake picked up speed also. Finally, exhausted and unable to run another step, I1 fell to the ground, convinced that my days were over. That's when I discovered that the 'black thing' following me was the bridle I had been dragging over my shoulder!" Sin is totally like that. It will stalk our conscience and fills us with the dread of guilt. Neither elaborate ritual nor psychological analysis is able to dissolve the burden of convicting guilt. Only Christ's grace of forgiveness can free us from that dread, which pursues us without any mercy. Want to have more mean- ing in your life?
