Superintendent Mary Sue Neves announced that. after a lengthy process of six facilities workshops and an independent study by a consultant. she wanted the consolidation issue brought to a vote at the next regu- lar meeting October 10. "Sometimes we have to address very difficult issues." Neves remarked. "WVe have to make tough decisions...\we have to really look at the facts and study it and we have done so." Neves said she would recommend consolidating the 9th through 12th grades from Altha and BHS into one countvnvide high school in order to receive special facil- ities funding from the state. She emphasized that state officials are not inclined to give funding to build com- munity schools or pour money into old facilities. Donnie Donaldson, schools, but we didn't. Is the money there to build five new schools'? No. Our students deserve the very best facilities to receive their education." Neves also stressed that high school programs are the most expensive to operate and a count-,vide high school would provide an opportunity for every student to receive expanded vocational programs. "On October 10. I'm going to ask the board to make a decision. providing us direction on whether wee want to combine Blountstown High School 9'-12 and Altha High School 9-12." she stated. "We have to have a deci- sion because we've got to know a plan. It's not easy for any of us and certainly not for me as Superintendent of Schools." District 2 School Board member Volena Barfield. who will be replaced by Kelly King in November. said she felt the new board members should address the matter after they are in office. "Any action we make will require tax- ation of at least two mills for at least three years." Barfield noted. "I've spoken many times in opposition to consolidation and people I represent have spoken in opposition of consolidation. To me. the issue is we're going to cripple the incoming board."
