MARRERO Continued From Page 7 of such games, albeit they were a lot less lifelike and graphic. And though I was much more partial to games that had me behind the wheel of a race car, I remember conflicts with my parents about them and how I just couldn't fathom why they disapproved. Lighten up, I said. It's just a game. Maybe I'm just getting old and more conservative (the horror!), but I find it in poor taste to be so excited about war games when U.S. troops are involved in a real guerilla war. I think such games trivialize the real violence and sacri- fices that soldiers make. Even as I write this there is a part of me telling myself to lighten up. It is, after all, just a game. But I now know that there is a point in all of our lives, whether we find out first hand as servicemen and women or take the easy way out and become newspaper editors, when we realize that war is real and that the world is a violent place. My question is, why add to it? And why imitate it? I'm not proposing any limits on such games. The freedom to produce and play them is what our armed forces fight for. Parents need to do their jobs, as mine did. Gamers I've talked to say the games are an escape from reality and the horrors of real war are not lost on them. But I ask those adults, young and old, who play them to stop for a moment the next time they go to flip on the switch of their Xbox. Use that imagination of yours. You're in an alley in Falluja. You can't see the bullets coming at you, but you can hear them. You might catch glimpses of your enemy, aiming right for you before you duck behind a wall. You might even have a close call when an explosion erupts nearby or a bullet grazes your thigh. Worst of all, you might have to run for cover after retrieving a dead comrade so he can be sent home in a flag-draped coffin. Whatever your imagination conjures up, just take a moment before escaping into that animated fantasy world to consider the ugly reality in which our soldiers now find themselves.
