Page 6 www. dcadvocate. net Thursday, February 18, 2010 Local Letter to the Editor Let me begin by saying I'm not much of a letter writer but what I saw and experi- enced on Friday, February 12th compelled me to give it a try Friday, February 12th as most know, there was a benefit dinner planned for Chad Reed's family at Cross City Park and Fanning, Springs Shriner's Club. I was fortunate enough to be asked to help with the cook- ing. At 4:00 am, I woke to some of the most inclimate weather I believe I've seen in Dixie. The wind was blow- ing hard, we had hard rain and temperatures in the 30's. On my way to Cross City the weather fared no better. I knew this dinner was for one of the best families in Dixie, but I had doubts of many coming out. Was I ever surprised to find so many volunteers, not only for cooking, but also for fix- ing plates, delivering plates, and other assistance as need- ed. The people of Dixie County and surrounding counties showed that no bad weather can deter them from a just cause of coming out to help. I know that in the past few, weeks it seems that Dixie has been in the news, mostly bad. However, I wish the en- tire state could have stood and witnessed the outpour- ing of compassion from the people of the Tri-county and found .out just how we are. From the sheriff, down to the lowest deputy, from the fami- lies of law enforcement and all the other volunteers, my hats off to all for a job well done. Like I said in the be- ginning, I assisted with the cooking, but I was a very small cog in a very huge gear. To the people of Dixie, Levy, and Gilchrist, and any other that supported this cause, Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Ritk Harris & family p.s. God Bless the family of Chad and our Sheriff's De- partment and volunteers. If you see a law enforcement personnel on the street, stop and thank them for the job they do. THIS DAY IN HISTORY February 23 marks the, 65th anniversary of the raising of the American Flag on Mount Suribachi on tle-island of Iwo . Jima, also known as "Sul- fur Island". On February 19,1945, 30,000 U.S. Marines land-' ed on the Japanese Island to take control of. the two airstrips on island. The US needed these airstrips because they were the clos- est to the main island of Japan. Prior to the invasion, B-24 Liberators bombed the is- -land for 74 consecutive days in an attempt to wear down the Japanese. Very little was' accomplished because of the elaborate underground , tunnel system the Japanese, had developed. Therefore the battle would be slow go- ing, ground gained inch by inch. On the fifth day of the battle, the Marines were able to capture Mount Suribachi, the highest point on the island, and gain an. insurmountable advantage. Five Marines, and one Navy Corpsman, Franklin Sous- ley, Harlon Block, Michael SStrank, John Bradley, Rene P.O. Box 1319 91 S.W. 12th Street Cross City, FL 32628 Gagnon, and Ira Hayes, at- tached an American flag to a pipe and raised it on the, mount. This historical event was captured in the movie "Flags of our Fathers", based on the book by John Bradley's son. Joe Rosenthal snapped a photo of the event, which has become the most reproduced photo- graph in history The significance of this ac- complishment resonated throughout the rest of the campaign, making it one of the most important victo- ries of WWII. RE: Thanks for TEA Party Convention This letter is to thank the TEA (Taxed Enough Al- ready) Party for sending me to Nashville to attend the na- tional political convention. It was a great experience and I learned much that's applica- ble to government locally, in Tallahassee, and in Washing- ton, DC. You probably saw bits and pieces on TV news reports, but let me explain what it was REALLY like. The TEA Party movement is less than one year old and this was its 1st convention. It was sold out with 600 people from every state attending the 2- day convention and 1,000 people attending the banquet featuring Sarah Palin as the keynote speaker. There were 150+ people in the press corps from all over the world. News crews from Japan, Italy, and elsewhere covered this event for both days. Yours truly was inter- viewed twice. Also, there were political candidates from around the country seeking TEA Party endorse- ments and showing solidari- ty with this conservative po- litical movement. The two-day convention con- sisted of classes designed to train grassroots volunteers in how to operate political campaigns and build voter turnout. Senator Scott ' Brown's (the Massachusetts Miracle) Internet Campaign Manager demonstrated how to use the internet for fund- raising and mobilizing vol- unteers. The Chairman of the California Republican Party taught a class about building a political cam- paign from the grassroots level. Other instructors fo- cused on topics from coali-, tion building to "cloud" com- puting for political purposes. Then came Sarah Palin and she was incredible. Her scope of knowledge on is- sues of .the day has certainly grown from two years ago, when she was suddenly plucked from Alaska to run as Vice-President. By the end of her speech, everyone in the banquet hall was standing and shouting "Run Sarah Run". The national news media was shocked and had a "deer in the head- lights" look on their faces. Lastly, the press kept wanti- ng to know the future of the TEA Party movement. I would sum it up by saying there are no plans to .create a 3rd political party. The 2010 short-term goal is to elect fiscally conservative candi- dates at all levels govern- ment, and to "retire" free- spending incumbent politi- cians, particularly those in Washington, DC. For a historical comparison you have to recall to over 200 years ago when a few of our forefathers dumped tea into the Boston Harbor to protest high British taxes. They had no idea their act would be a spark to ignite many like- minded colonists into action. They couldn't dream their protest would be recorded in the history books. Today's TEA Party movement can't predict the future either,. whether it will flounder or flourish. But, at this moment in time, it is the most excit- ing, energetic political dis- course in the whole county. It has sparked a discussion that may change the course of our great nation. Thanks again for asking me to go and represent Conserv- ative voters across North Florida.
