www. dcadvocate.net Page 3 Thursday February 18, 2010 Trort/l Rers By Bonnie WIlson As we traveled down the highway to our trailhead to- day there was a bit of rain falling, then suddenly lots of rain. I was beginning to think today may not have been a good day to ride. However as we pulled into the trailhead it stopped raining. Oh Boy, I thought 'this was a "here's your sign" deal that I was desper- ately looking for. We un- loaded our boys, Buddy and, Zip and after a few hellos we headed out on our trail. Our ride today was at Pruitt, which is located in Dunnellon. It's a great place to ride. Phil Parent, my husband Dave and I were the three anigos for this venture. Randy and Fay Beasley were also there with their beautiful Paso's and ready to ride. However, we three amigos were on Quarter horses and this time we actually took the high road, and left the Beasley's to the low road. We had a won- derfulride. Pruitt is one of my very favorite places to- ride and the thing I really like about Pruitt is that they have.these extraordinary hills that you can climb. It's good for your horses. I rode Buddy today and we had an excellent ride. He was very willing and trusting of me and hle did an amazing job. Through tight turns that were more like a jungle than a forest, he moved obedient- ly with ease. Palmetto were plet iful and everywhere as we blazed our way through the trail. I really enjoy the different levels of paths available at Pruitt. If you, prefer you can ride thru the forest at the bottom and go thru with no hills to climb, just the crunch of fallen leaves, buried beneath the forest floor. The hilltops give you obstacles to go through, like fallen Ipgs and tight trails to maneuver around and down, over and 1 1S I il, ll'S. Int S,. P.r,.!p I. , '1T T 1 866-737-7966 MOVIES STARTING FRI. It makes me feel as ' though I am a fearless trail blazer. That is with one ex- ception. You must avoid spi- ders and their weds. I hate spiders more than just about.anything. In the forest there are huge ones, almost as big as your hand. Phil was our leader on our hill- top trail. I think he hates spiders as much as I do. I did hear him yell a few times as he knocked down a few webs that were unfortu- nately inhabited. As we traveled all the way through our scenic hilltop 'plateau we had an amazing view of land below us. Deer stood quietly watching us closely, ready to leap at any given moment. My, they are amazingly beautiful to see. Just as we were heading back down the last hill to- wards the trailhead, the thunder began to roll. The clouds became darker. Oh my! Did you know the for- est gets really dark when there is no sunshine shinning through? We ' were in such a hurry to ride this morning that I forgot to put our saddle horn bags on our horses. Those bags just happen. to contain our rain ponchos. Oops can't go back now! It did rain and we did get wet, however it did not stop us from the fun we were hav-. ing. It was phenomenal. We had more fun than a barrel of monkeys...wet monkeys at that! Later back at the trailhead we gathered together and had lunch and discussed our trail ride. It was a good day after all. It did not rain on our parade. Well, maybe it did but it certainly did not sto1i us from a great trail ride. If you love trail riding, and good company come on out and join us. Check us out on the web at www.fla- horse.com/lchc. Until next time, happy trails to you. 2/11/10 MCCALL, RAWDY E., 24, DEPUTY BRANNING, VOP, LOITERING OR PROWLING 2/11/10 CORNISH, BRANDY NICOLE, 30, DEPUTY BRAN- NIN, VOP-FRAUD, VOP- GRAND THEFT FRAUD THEFT 2/9/10 PRESCOTT, ROCKY WAYNE, 21, SGT. The FWC would like to hear from Florida's hunters re- garding their views on this rule proposal. Hunters are encouraged to go to MyFWC.com/Deer for a de- tailed summary of the pro- posed changes and, until March 31, provide online comments and constructive 'feedback. Currently only compound bows, longbows and recurve bows may be used during the archery season, unless a hunter qualifies for and has obtained a disabled crossbow permit. Only those persons with that permit are allowed to use crossbows during, archery season. But, if the proposal were to become law, any hunter with a hunting license and archery season permit could use a crossbow (or a bow) during archery season begin- ning in 2011. For more information on this proposal or to provide com- ments, go to MyFWC.com/Deer. DCCG Carries the Flag for the Fiddler Crabs The Dixie County Color Guard (not associated with the school) carried the national colors for the Fiddler Crab pa- rade in Steinhatchpe this past weekend. Lt. Commander Ada Alcorn was carrying the colors for this parade as prac- tice for future parades when Commander William Bierce may not be able to attend. The DCCG currently has seven members and is interested in increasing its membership by another five to seven re- cruits. If you are in the 8th to 11th grade and interested in performing military style flag services and/or rifle exhibi- tion performances contact one of the current members . about practice times. Other members are David Davidson, Billy Filmon, Desarae Greene, Michelle Johnston, and Jen- nifer Sparacino. FWC: Help wildlife beyond the cold snap The figures are astounding and unprecedented. More than 4,500 sea turtles were rescued from the cold water in January Manatee carcass- es continue to appear, putting the deaths for 2010 at more than 200 after only one month. For comparison, the highest number of manatee deaths for a single calendar year is 429. The public can help efforts to conserve and fund re- search for both sea turtles and manatees by purchasing a specialty license plate or decal. The extra fee for the sea turtle tag helps fund the Sea Turtle Grants Program. Approximately 30 percent is distributed to the grants pro- gram, which is administered by the nonprofit Caribbean Conservation Corporation. Visit www.helpingseatur- tles.org for more informa- tion. The other 70 percent of tag revenue goes to the FWC's Marine Turtle Protec- tion Program to support re-. search and management ac- tivities related to sea turtles. The decals are on sale for $5 each at Florida tax collec- tors' offices, or as a volun- tary add-on to boat registra- tion fees. Decals from previ- ous years are available from MyFWC.com/SeaTurtle and. MyFWC.com/Manatee. Specialty license plates are available at all county tax collectors' offices, as well as online at www.buyaplate.com. A & K NURSERY Vegetable plants are here.....
