Dixie Sighting


 "The Orange Chap"
 Cindy Pierce of Old Town found this little creature in her front yard recently. She nicknamed it,
"the Orange Chap". Cindy said she wanted to keep it and see what it turned into, but hubby wasn't
too keen on her starting a worm habitat.
 Well Cindy, I showed this picture to our County Extension Agent, Holly Houghton, and she has
identified it as a SPICEBUSH
SWALLLOWTAIL. (see
picture to right).
 Spicebush Swallowtails are
beautiful butterflies with a
wingspan of 2.5-3.8 inches and
can be found in the eastern
half of the US, except in
extreme south Florida and
Texas.
 They lay their eggs, one at
a time, usually on the
underside of leaves. Typically
they are a whitish/greenish
color; that is until they are
about to pupate. Their hey arn
eyespots are much bigger, with
the black part being kind of shiny. They also have two other secondary fake eye spots that are
yellow. The bottom half of their bodies are a sort of pinkish color. Viewed from certain angles, they
look like a small snake, to help deter predators from munching down on them.
