ACCIDENT Continued from page 1 Veneer and involved three vehicles. Cross City Police Officer Thomas Tumlin investigated the accident and reported the following information. Sherry Shivley of Cross City was driving in the left lane traveling south when she stopped for a truck that was making a left turn off US 19. Keva Wynant Wharton of Tallahassee was also traveling south in the left lane and attempted to pass Shively by turning into the right lane at which time she struck the tires of a semi truck, driven by Leeman Moore, Sr. of Polk City. When she hit the tires she bounced back into the Bronco before stopping in the middle of the roadway. Wharton's passenger Rodney Jones, Jr. was the only injury in the accident and was transported by Dixie EMS to a Gainesville hospital where he is being treated. Wharton has been charged with careless driving and improper lane change. Within minutes of the call to the US 19 accident, Cross City Police and EMS personnel were called to another accident that occurred at the corner of CR 351 and Barber Ave. Both drivers and their passengers escaped injury after one driver pulled out from Barber Ave. into the line of traffic on CR 351. That particular intersection is known for being difficult to see the flow of traffic during courthouse hours, as parking is permitted on both sides of CR 351. Reminder please slow down to the speed limit of 20mph along this section of roadway, as it is also a busy pedestrian thoroughfare. Community Packs the Refuge Friends Program Over 70 eager attendees packed into the 'second floor of the Cedar Key Library in order to learn about the formation of the Cedar Keys, the shell and sand mound of our coastline and the cultures that built them. Friends of Refuges: Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges sponsored "Shell Cultures of the Gulfcoast", a free presentation. The Staff Archeologist from US Fish and Wildlife's Regional Ecological Services Office in Atlanta was the guest speaker at this year's Friends Annual Meeting. Richard Warner's presentation showed aerial photos of several the local mounds, a variety of pottery found here, ancient trade maps, houses built by the cultures of 600 years ago, fishing and hunting techniques The Boyd Report and more. Warner's main point throughout was that the indigenous cultures were not primitive as some think, but instead, complex, sophisticated peoples who developed ceremonialism, art, and technology. After the program, the Friends group was honored with certificates of appreciation from the Fish' and Wildlife Regional Director Sam Hamilton for their work during the refuge anniversary celebration on Seahorse Key in July of 2004. President Rebecca Roberts told of plans to advocate and support the refuge for 2005. Anyone interested in becoming a Friend of the refuges can call 352/493-0238 for membership information.
