6A The Madison Enterprise-Recorder www.greenepublishing.com Srouno Mabison Count Friday, August 1, 2008 Book Signing Promotes Art And Community By Michael Curtis Greene Publishing, Inc. Promoted as a "Rally in the Alley," referring to efforts by shop owner Janet Moses and others to create a nostalgic attraction to the side streets adjacent to stores located on Range in downtown Madison, on Friday, July 25, at 7 p.m., author Sudye Cauthen shared her childhood memories and her newest book, Southern Comforts, with about 70 fans and visitors. A native Floridian, Cauthen's book is a look back on childhood and a time when the dreams of youth prevailed. "Residing perpet- ually inside each adult, there dwells the soul of a child," Cauthen noted. During the book review, a variety of exotic and flavorful teas were served by Sandy Wilson, operator of the new Art Tea Facts tearoom in the rear of the shop, where guests and friends gath- ered. Musical guests Jay and Linda Willingham opened the celebra- tion with several folk tunes, setting just the right tone for Cau- then, who then took listeners along a literary journey Following her colorful and captivating discussion, visitors were treated to a variety of culinary delicacies that were skillfully prepared by chefs from the 111 Grill. Cauthen was born in Gainesville and raised in Alachua Coun- ty, in a world whose boundaries stretched over farm, marsh and swampland. From city streets to dirt roads, Cauthen's writing blends historical anecdotes, self-reflection and folklore. Ultimate- ly, she takes her readers back through time, mixing culture, color and perspective. Cauthen sees this beauty being threatened by de- velopment and asks only that others take notice.
