It is one of the most common bacteria found on our skin and it is the number one cause of superficial skin infections. Beginning in the early 1960's a new concern was recognized, specifically the emergence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains in hospitals. This resistance was caused by multiple factors, particularly the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. In the last decade, the percentage of Staphylococcus isolates positive for MRSA has literally exploded in 'hospitals. Continued and often expanded resistance to antibiotics has followed this growth in MRSA positive cultures. This is particularly concerning due to the slow development of new classes of antibiotics. In the last several years a new entity known as Community AssociatedlAcquired Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has been increasingly documented in particular populations. People who acquire CA-MRSA do not have a healthcare exposure and they have been found in populations of athletes, military recruits, prisons, the immune-compromised and people with no apparent risk factors. These strains, unlike those bacteria associated with healthcare-related infections, have additional genetic factors which make them particularly resistant and invasive. MRSA infections in both the community and healthcare setting are a problem that will continue, and very likely worsen in the foreseeable future. With that in mind, strict adherence to standard precautions in most settings and isolation procedures, when appropriate, are critical for dealing with this problem. Objectives: 1. Describe Colonization and Infection 2. Understand the differences) between Methicillin-sensitive and Methicillin-resistant organisms 3. List risk factors for Colonization and Infection with MRSA 4. Describe precautions for limiting the spread' of MRSA in healthcare settings and the community 5. Utilize criteria for determining whether a MRSA infection is most likely hospital or community-associated Location: North Florida Community College, Fine Arts Auditorium Bldg 10, 325 NW Turner Davis Drive, Madison, FL 32340 Pre-Registration is reqaui as seatg limited.
