This herd of deer is in a forest, and, I think, must be intended for red deer, which are larger and stronger, though not more graceful, than fallow- deer. Those we see in parks in England are generally of the latter kind; and you know how pretty they are, and how tame sometimes. Red deer are notcommon in England now, but in the Highlands of Scotland they still lead a natural and wild existence. There, deer-stalk- ing is considered excellent sport. The red deer distrusts man; and great care and skill are needed—either by crawling on the ground, or hiding behind projecting stones—to approach near enough for a shot.
