"We need to develop more than just football skills as coaches," Chipoletti said. "I see a program that develops players on and off the field." Chipoletti said he plans to run a spread offense that stretches the field of play vertically and horizontally and he believes he has good athletes to run the system, but he said the team's success with his system of play will depend on how quickly the players catch on to the schemes. He has about 55 players coming out in the spring. Chipoletti predicted 40 would probably make the fall program. Former head Coach Jamie Baker will continue to be associated with the team. Chipoletti said having the former head coach on his staff won't pose any conflicts. Baker thus far hasn't been around that much. He said there's another factor that will come into play. "I'm probably a little more abrasive than he is," Chipoletti said. Chipoletti was an All-State, All-American linebacker at Orange Park High School from 1993-95. He was Defensive Player of the Year in Jacksonville in 1994. He won a scholarship ,and played linebacker at the University of Central Florida, Orlando from 1995-97. Chipoletti was linebacker and running back coach at N.B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville from 1997-99. Hewas defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 1999-2001 at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville. He' was head junior varsity coach and co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach from 2001-02 at Orange Park High School and worked at Fleming Island High School in Orange Park from 2003 to the present. He was defensive coordinator in 2003: hlas been offensive coordinator since 2004 and assistant head coach. His resume' summarizes his coaching philosophy. "My goal is to use the sport of football as a tool to build boys into mentally strong and dependable men by teaching and upholding three fundamental characteristics of - responsibility, loyalty and courage," he wrote. "I believe the true measure of a man is by his ability to serve others. The basic foundation will not only develop a winning football- program but will promote winning families, schools and communities." Chipoletti has three unbreakable rules. No drugs. No stealing. No alcohol. His philosophy is that "character is not caught, but must be systematically taught to players." His core values: Love Affection and concern for the well being of others. Honesty Being truthful is not always the easiest thing, but it will benefit you in the long run. Respect Respect yourself and others around you. Remember, what you do to yourself, you do to the team. Commitment Unwavering display of loyalty to the process and to achieving the desired result. Effort Exertion of physical or mental power. You don't always get what you want, but you always get what you deserve. Chipoletti, son of 30-year high school coach Neal Chipoletti, said he believes having a personal faith in God can be a source of strength for the coach and his players. He said the program will stress the importance of family and being responsible in the family. This includes the family at home, viewing the football team as family, and carrying out those values in the community. Academics will be an important part of Chipoletti's program. Even if a player never gets a scholarship, he can get a head start in life with a good education. Discipline.is very important ."It makes us better persons." "It's not something we want only for playing in practices and games, it's something we want from them 365 days a year," Chipoletti said. Last week he was in the lead when the shaft of a ball joint broke. The right front spring lost its support when the shaft broke and it knocked Bowers out of the race,... ... After last week's race, and in spite of his loss, Bowers was approached by a young autograph seeker, Cordell Walker, 7, in the pit area. Cordel I was too shy to ask on his own. An adult family member, James Morgan, asked for him.. "He's a big Shelton Bowers fan." Morgan said. Ashley Newsome. 8,; also approached Bowers for an autograph. ... Bowers, who has young children of his own, keeps cold Gatorade and other snacks in his race car trailer for any ofthe kids who come up to talk to him. "I try to drive and act like somebody." Bowers said. "Kids, are looking at you. I try not to drive like a wild-man and run into people." Bowers is a big fan of NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. . Bowers started in the ideal poll position with Blum on the outside poll. / Blum, who finished second, said his car's suspension system still needs work. . "We still have handling issues," he said. But he complimented track owner Tony Parker on getting rid of the drivers who were causing problems in the Sportsman Feature. He said the good racers are left. Arthur Conquest finished third in the Sportsman Feature. He said the first and second place finishers were just a little faster than him. More Speed Conquest is excited about the prospect of Parker adding a late model category. He has already constructed a late model race car that can compete in the category.
