Stargazing Experience Levy County as never before-under some of the darkest skies in Florida. The 2007 Cedar Key Star Party, sponsored by the Florida Park Service and the Friends of St. Clair Whitman House CSO, will be held Feb. 11 through 17. This event is free and open to the general public, offering amateurs and astronomers an opportunity to see Omega Centauri, Centaurus A, Jupiter, Saturn and other sky- high sights. Three events will be held throughout the week, each open to the public with an additional event open to event volunteers. For public participants a Daytime Solar and Lunar Observance, Night Public Stargazing and a Night Nature and Binocular Stargazing Hayride are scheduled. Daytime Solar & Lunar Observance This event will be held Monday, Feb. 12 through Friday, Feb. 16 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Cedar Key City Beach, next to the harbor. Visitors will have a chance to see the sun in real- time action with an H-Alpha light, exposing details not seen by the naked eye. There will also be a chance to view mountains, craters and seas of the moon. Night Public Stargazing View the spectacular night sky from the grounds of the Cedar Key State Museum. Stargazing will commence at 7 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13 and Friday, Fe'b, . 1 .6 .. .. Night Nature & Binocular Stargazing Hayrides Gaze at the stars and partake in a hayride around the Cedar Key Scrub Reserve. Experience the nature around as well as above. Event to be held Wednesday, Feb. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. If the skies are clouded on Wednesday, the event will be rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 15. Volunteers interested in working any of these events are welcome and encouraged. The fourth stargazing opportunity, offered only to event volunteers, will be directed to a dark, nearby private location. Volunteers are asked to share their telescopes and knowledge at observing sessions. Equipment is to be set up and torn down each night and electricity will be available at the public sites. It is requested that volunteers bring 50' to 100' cords. The private viewing site does not have electricity, so plan accordingly. The event includes free time during the day for relaxing, touring the quaint fishing village of Cedar Key and day tripping to an abundance of nearby attractions within Levy County. Activities of interest include wildlife sanctuaries and birding, fishing, boating, hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, horseback riding, flea and fruit markets, state park touring, manatee viewing, snorkeling, cave diving, scuba diving, a quilt museum and a local winery. Covered Wagon Rides Feb. 10-11 and 17-18, Manatee Springs State Park and RV Campground will host an event that goes back to the days of the pioneers. Park visitors can travel in a reproduction covered wagon through the Manatee Springs State Park's trail system at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Throughout the day re- enactors will bring to life the history of the park and past cultures in an informative and entertaining approach. Organized by Florida Federation of Garden Clubs (FFGC), District V, the celebration includes Legislative Day on Feb. 23 and the Springs Celebration on Feb. 24. On Legislative Day, the public is invited to Fanning Springs State Park to meet state and local officials during a continental breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The Springs Celebration, at Fanning State Park where activities include music, canoeing, educational displays, cycling and walking the Nature Coast State Trail, and food, promises a day full of outdoor activities for nature lovers. Special equine demonstrations, Native American Painted Pony, storytelling and painted rain barrels auction will be highlighted at Town of Trenton's Trail Depot.
