After coming to this area, I found no openings in the world of journalism, so I turned for awhile to ‘writing for a small firm in Gainesville. I consider it incredible good luck to have recently been hired as staff writer for the Levy County — Journal. My approach to journalism -_ is based on the deeply held belief that there exists no better political system than a democracy. Mr. Cronkite presented the news in a manner that was clear, calm, and balanced. Perhaps my memory sweetens the past but as I recall back then reporters treated those they interviewed with respect. Of course since only 30 minutes was given to presentation of turmoil both domestic and foreign, there was no time for the chit-chat, the Hollywood gossip, or the, ite newspaper mottos came from early.on in. my career: - Print, truth; let the people, decide. However, they do pay city ad valorem taxes, generally at the rate of about 5 mills. Many city merchants were confused last week after another newspaper printed erroneous information that fire assess- ments would raise as much as 900 percent. Williston attorney Norm Fugate pointed out that munici- palities fund the fire protection services from these general ad. valorem tax revenues.
