(AP) — The barroom comedy ‘‘Cheers’ hoisted a leading four Emmy Awards, in- cluding the prize for best comedy series and trophies for stars Kirstie Alley and Bebe Neuwirth. NBC’s “L.A. Law,†won its fourth Emmy for best dramatic series at Sunday’s awards ceremony. Other major winners: James Earl Jones of ABC’s ‘‘Gabriel’s Fire,†best actor in a dramatic series; Patricia Wettig of ABC’s “thirty- something,†best actress in a dra- matic series; and Burt Reynolds of CBS’s “Evening Shade,†best actor in a comedy series. “Cheersâ€â€™ now has a total of 26 Emmys, pulling even with ‘Hill Street Blues’ for the second most Emmys ever for a series. ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ has the most, 29. ‘The Carol Burnett Show’’ is fourth with 22. “I said we were good, but now we're venerable I guess,†said “Cheers†director, co-creator and co-executive producer James Bur- rows, who aico won the comedy directing trophy. ‘‘Cheers†is enter- ing its 10th season. Co-star Ted Danson was nominated eight times before winning last year for best actor in a comedy. Ms. Neuwirth captured her second consecutive Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy for her por- trayal of the cold-as-ice psycho- therapist Dr. Lilith Sternin-Crane. Reynolds got the comedy actor award this year for his role as a high school football coach. Comic Jonathan Winters won his first Emmy — best supporting comedy actor for ‘Davis Rules.†James Earl Jones, who opened the show with a pompous speech that ended with a scripted pie in his face, got two Emmys. Along with recognition for his role in ‘“‘Gabriel’s Fire,†about an ex-con who becomes a private investigator, he was named best supporting actor in a miniseries for ‘Heat Wave,†a TNT miniseries about the 1965 Watts race riots. Ms. Wettig was honored for her portrayal of cancer victim Nancy Weston. It was her second straight Emmy for best dramatic actress and her third for ‘thirtysometh- ing,†which has been canceled. She won as best supporting actress 1988. “It’s a little sad,†Wettig said, fighting back tears. Her co-star Timothy Busfield was named best supporting dramatic actor for his portrayal of the im- mature yuppie Elliot Weston. “Cool!†said a bemused Busfield. ABC led with 26 awards; CBS was second with 15, followed by NBC with 13; PBS, 12; HBO, 5; syndic- ated, 2; Disney, 1; Fox, 1; and TNT, 1. “Separate But Equal,†a chron- icle of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1955 school desegregation ruling, won in the best drama, comedy special or miniseries category.
